The countdown to MUET begins!!!!

10 more days till MUET on 20th July.

To all the MUET candidates in my class from April to July 2013, all the best.

Please use this last 10 days wisely, follow the instructions which I have shared with you in the last class.

1. complete your academic vocabulary workbook.
2. practice writing; analyse the question as we do in class and write it according to the structure you've learned with the linking/trigger phrases.
3. practice the past year reading papers and listening papers.
4. allocate 2 hours a day x 10 days = 20 hours for your muet practice

Its do-able and worthwhile, to do well for your muet and achieving the band you need : )

Online MUET course

Hi all,

Lately, actually over the past 2 years, I have had numerous request for an online muet course.

This students are unable to attend the classes because they are living outside of KL.

I have always been a big believer of face to face classroom teaching hence I have never entertained the thought of an online course.

However, I suppose one must change with the times, especially if it would be useful for others.

I am working on an online course now. Will launch it in August 2013. It will be be series of videos, PowerPoint and email communication is the main means of communication.

Since it will be a first time - for me. Will keep the intake of this online course small -  10 students, so that quality is maintained.

In order for this course to be successful, interested students must have the following.

1. Computer, laptop or tablet devices with speakers: to watch videos and write assignments.
2. Access to the Internet: to download videos, email assignments.
3. Time: must be able to allocate time, to complete assignments on time.
4. Motivation: must be motivated to obtain target band for muet, target band would of course depend on the requirement of your university.
5. Located outside of KL: ideally, this course is for students outside of KL because its difficult for them to travel to KL for face to face classes.

If you think this online course is something you want to consider, then email me, joline.tang@hotmail.com.
In your email, tell me about your muet experience and what you want to achieve for muet in November.

I will update the blog with more information later ie number of lessons and course fee.

The face to face class will still be the main muet classes which I will be conducting, this online course is something I am testing and trying out.

Thanks.

Joline Tang

MUET CANDIDATES who live outside of KL

Hi all,

Received a few emails from students in Penang, Perak, Pahang and Terengganu. They are taking the MUET in November.

Would you guys prefer the intensive course to be over 10 weekends ie 10 Saturdays, or option two, over one week, ie Monday to Friday, or Tuesday to Saturday? 3 hours per day.

For option 2, you guys would have to arrange accommodation in kl.

If there are enough students ie about 20 students who are interested, I will arrange a class just for out station students.

You can email me at joline.tang@hotmail.com

Highly motivated and dedicated students in MUET class!

Over the years, I've met a few special individuals who have taken the necessary steps to obtain the Band they need for MUET.

For instance, last year, 2 students in my class, one from PJ and the other from Salak Tinggi, would take the bus to the train station, then board the train. From the train station, they hop into a cab, in order to get to the class.

They spend the 1 hour 30 minutes commute (in the bus, train and cab) reading or working on the vocabulary workbook.

I really admired their determination.

Where are they now?

The student from Salak Tinggi, who took MUET twice on her own, before joining my class) scored Band 4, is now pursuing Law in UITM. While the student from PJ scored Band 4 as well, is now pursuing a degree in Bio-technology.

                     **********************************************************************************

This time around, a few other students really take the cake, one travels from Kedah, 3 from Malacca, 2 from Terengganu, a few from Cyberjaya and many others from not so near locations.

They are in class with me every week, Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays, without fail.

Yes, MUET may seem like a pain-in-the-ass test, but its just one of the many hurdles you need to overcome as a university student, no matter how many times it takes.

MUET Writing Task 2: How to write a body paragraph?

Hi all,

Pretty sure MUET candidates all around Malaysia are working hard on the speaking, writing, listening and reading components. My students and I are forging ahead as well. The classes have been intensive - but the students in my MUET classes have been real troopers - all working very hard because they are determined to do well for MUET in July.

Anyways, here's a short note on writing a body paragraph.

MUET Writing Task 2 Sample Question

Employers should pay young people the same salary as older colleagues doing the same job.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Body Paragraph Example

Many people believe that workers should be paid according to age rather then merit. However, I feel that they should be paid according to results. Take for example, someone in their twenties working in a financial company. They deserve the same salary because they are doing the same work. Moreover, young people nowadays are often faster at doing things than their older work colleagues which compensates for lack of experience.

Let's break it down

Note also the phrases in red, start each sentence with connective phrases

Opinion Statement: Many people believe that workers should be paid according to age rather then merit.

Contradiction: However, I feel that they should be paid according to results.

Example: Take for example, someone in their twenties working in a financial company.

Reason: They deserve the same salary because they are doing the same work.

Explanation: Moreover, young people nowadays are often faster at doing things than their older work colleagues which compensates for lack of experience.

Part 2: 2 more Must Knows for Speaking

This is Part 2 of the speaking series.

Many students ask me this question. How should I speak in the MUET speaking component? Like having a conversation? Like talking to a friend?

Well, it depends. How do you speak when speaking to your friend?

Would you speak in the MUET speaking component like speaking with a friend i.e. a casual conversation?

Its important to note that the MUET speaking is not the same as daily conversation or speaking.
Think of it as acting. Yes, acting.

Must know #1: Use the PEE format when speaking.

P stands for Point
E stands for Explanation
E stands for Example

Must know #2: Use signposting phrases. It informs and guides the examiner and other candidates on what you are about to say.

When giving your points: Say, First of all, Secondly, Next, Finally...............
When giving explanation. Say, please allow me to explain on my point.......
When giving examples: Say, Please allow me to give you an example..........

Just a quick survey. I would like to know which locations suits you best for MUET class.
(At the moment, all MUET classes are conducted in Cheras)

Please email me at joline.tang@hotmail.com

In your email please tell me 2 things:

Copy and paste the questions below.

1) Which location suits you best? Cheras / Petaling Jaya / Shah Alam / Gombak / Taman Melawati/ wangsa Maju etc (Locations like Malacca, Seremban, Pahang, not within Selangor and KL are not possible for now)

2) What day and time suits you best? Weekday night at 7: 45 to 9:45 pm twice a week or Saturday at 11 to 3pm?

All the best Feb/March MUET candidates!

Last Sunday, completed my last MUET lesson for the Feb/March candidates. This time around it was 138 candidates. You guys have worked hard and it was intense! Hope all your efforts pay off.

Remember to relax and chill this week. No point stressing unnecessarily at this point. You guys already know what to do. You have been eating, breathing and dreaming about MUET since our class in December 2012/ January 2013.

Get your stationery, ID and slip ready on Friday. Start sleeping well from Thursday onwards cause you might be too excited to sleep on Friday night : )

Finally, all the best to all Feb/March MUET candidates. Give it your all this Saturday.

Just a quick reminder to my MUET students.

For listening, remember to predict as many answers as possible. Write down possible answers by the side, don't worry about trying to fit the exact words or fret about spelling yet. You have time to consider that later.

For reading, remember to skim and scan for answers, KEY WORDS are crucial. It helps you keep focus rather then reading the entire passage, it's a waste of precious time.

For writing, remember to allocate time accordingly, for task 1, remember to plan as we do in class, and write in the format you've learned in class. For task 2, remember to look for the general subject and specific task in order to intepret the question accurately and plan according to the structure you've learned as well.

All the best, waiting to hear good news from all of you when the results are out.

Hope when you guys call, text or email me, you guys would be in university pursuing your law, medicine, business, IT, biotechnology degrees. As for those, who need Band 3 or 4 to graduate from university, I hope you'll be calling from your new job.
